13-Year-Old Peregrine Falcon Giga from Palace of Culture and Science Dies

A 13-year-old female peregrine falcon named Giga, known from the Warsaw Palace of Culture and Science, has died after being found injured on Wednesday.

Discovery and Rescue

A wounded peregrine falcon was found at the entrance to the Youth Palace at the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw on Wednesday, February 11, around 3:00 PM. Security personnel, police officers from Śródmieście, and the Eco-Patrol of the City Guard were called to the scene, and the bird was transported to the Bird Sanctuary at Warsaw Zoo.

The bird was disoriented and did not react with typical flight from humans, indicating it might be injured. It was carefully secured in a cardboard box and covered with NRC foil to prevent hypothermia until the rescue team arrived.

Identification as Giga

In the evening, forums for falcon enthusiasts reported that the injured bird might be Giga – a female peregrine falcon hatched in 2013, long associated with the nest on the roof of the Palace of Culture and Science. The identification ring number DA 22.384 was cited as evidence.

Death Confirmation

This morning it was announced that the injured falcon did not survive. The exact cause of death and the results of the animal’s examination will be known in the next few days. It was confirmed that the deceased falcon was indeed the palace Giga.
