18-Month-Old Abandoned at Safe Haven in Goleniów; Mother Located, No Charges Filed

An 18-month-old boy was left at a “window of life” in Goleniów, Poland, prompting a police search for his mother, who will not face criminal charges.

18-Month-Old Boy Found at Window of Life

An 18-month-old boy was discovered at the “window of life” located at the Hospital Center in Goleniów on April 17, 2026. A card with the child’s name and date of birth was found with him.

Police Locate Mother; No Criminal Liability

The boy was taken to the hospital for a health assessment, and was found to be in good condition. Police quickly identified the mother, but according to Sergeant Martynna Kowalska of the Goleniów County Police Headquarters, she will not be prosecuted for leaving the child at the safe haven, as Polish law permits this action.

Why Police Sought the Mother’s Identity

Despite the anonymity intended by the “window of life” concept, authorities seek to identify the mother to initiate proceedings to terminate her parental rights and enable the child’s adoption. Without knowing the mother’s identity, adoption becomes significantly more difficult, if not impossible.

Julia Jurczuk-Macek, an attorney, explained that establishing the mother’s identity is a standard procedure in these cases.

Child Placed in Temporary Foster Care

The 18-month-old boy has been placed in temporary foster care at a family home in Nowogard.
