Court lifts detention on famed attorney Waldemar G., former rector, after 15 months in prison. G. faces 11 charges and will be released on bail.
Waldemar G. Released from Detention
TVN24 reported that renowned lawyer and former rector Professor Waldemar G. was released from detention after 15 months, granted bail for pledging financial security. Prosecutors accused him of committing 11 crimes, including fraud, paid protection, and attempted bribery of a CBA agent. The Central Anti-Corruption Bureau detained G. in April 2024 amid a corruption investigation, following orders from the subregional prosecution office in Podkarpackie. At the time, the lawyer served as rector of the European Higher School of Law and Administration and a lecturer at Tadeusz Rydzyk University in Toruń, while also running his own firm. He represented the Mateusz Morawiecki government in proceedings before the European Union’s Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
Detention of the Lawyer
Following G.’s arrest, the National Prosecutor’s Office stated that he faced charges of leveraging influence within state institutions to obtain a monetary benefit of 50,000 zlotys, and attempts to shape unfavorable asset regulations amounting to 200,000 zlotys. These offenses carry a maximum prison term of eight years. Evidence collected by the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau indicated that, under the supervision of the Podkarpackie organized crime division, G. conducted criminal activities in parallel with his legal practice. Prosecutors said two female associates assisted him and were also charged. None of the three pleaded guilty.
Lawyer’s Testimony
A year ago, Goniec.pl reported that Waldemar G. had testified in an investigation into irregularities at the Justice Fund. He allegedly claimed to have received funds due to his personal involvement in the case of Zbigniew Ziobro, the former Minister of Justice. G. approached him after being denied by Deputy Minister Marcin Romanowski. The PiS MP faces 11 charges in the Justice Fund probe, one for “participating in an organized group aimed at committing property crimes,” with the remaining ten relating to abuse of powers or neglect of duties, including seven for misappropriating entrusted assets totaling 107 million zlotys.
