Grobla: Driver Crashes into Pilgrims

A 54‑year‑old man drove an Opel Vectra into a group of pilgrims on a local road in Grobla, Łódź region, causing serious injuries including a 2.5‑year‑old child. The incident occurred at approximately 18:00 on Sunday on route 3921E in the municipality of Przedbórz. The driver was arrested and found to have 0.65 mg/l alcohol in his breath.

Incident Details

The driver, Jarosław R., had previously been banned from operating motor vehicles. He struck 11 people, including a child, and caused injuries ranging from broken legs to head and spinal trauma. All victims were treated on site by security and medical teams from the Diocesan Pilgrimage, and psychological support was also provided.

Charges Against Jarosław R.

On Tuesday, Jarosław R. faced charges at the District Prosecutor’s Office in Radom. He is suspected of causing a road catastrophe threatening the health and lives of many and for operating a vehicle while intoxicated despite a formal driving ban. Prosecutors alleged the 54‑year‑old “negligently observed the roadway and failed to adjust speed to road conditions.” He faces up to 15 years imprisonment. A request for temporary two‑month pre‑trial detention was approved by the court.

Response and Support

Security and medical services from the Diocesan Pilgrimage were first on the scene, with additional medical teams from Warsaw’s Pilgrimage providing aid. The organization ensured all required formalities were observed, with authorized traffic control, proper marking and safe movement on the local road, and adequate medical coverage. Participants, led by their guide, decided to continue the pilgrimage after the incident.
