Is Nawrocki Stronger Than Tusk? Over Half of Poles Want the President to Have Greater Power [SURVEY]

A recent poll shows that 52% of Poles believe the president should hold increased executive authority in Poland.

Prime Minister or President?

On Wednesday, August 6, Karol Nawrocki took the oath before the National Assembly and was sworn in as the new president of Poland. His term is set to pit him against the prime minister and the government. Meanwhile, a poll conducted by the Institute of Pollster Research for “Super Express” reveals that more than half the Polish population believes the president should wield greater power. Fifty‑two percent answered in favor, while 38 percent support the prime minister holding the main executive authority. Ten percent of respondents had no opinion.

The President’s Office Seeks Changes

Adam Andruszkiewicz, deputy chief of the Presidential Office, told “Super Express” that there are plans to attempt a change in this area. “We also intend to discuss with specialists about the division of powers between the president and the current Cabinet,” the politician said. Poland operates a parliamentary‑cabinet system. Under the constitution, both the president and prime minister hold executive authority, but administration is carried out by the government. Expanding presidential powers would require constitutional amendments.

Karol Nawrocki Announces Plan to Amend Constitution

During his inaugural address before the National Assembly, Nawrocki announced his intention to pass a new constitution. He stated he believes it will be ready by the end of his term. “Over nearly 30 years, so many competency disputes have arisen,” he said. “Recently, the Polish constitution has been repeatedly abused, so as a political class we must begin acting on solutions for a new fundamental law that will be ready by 2030,” he added. He also mentioned forming a council for the restoration of the state apparatus, inviting representatives of all political environments.
