Police officer struck by vehicle driven by pregnant woman in Pniewie; both hospitalized.
Accident in West Pomeranian
On Thursday, August 14, a serious collision occurred on provincial road No. 121 in Pniewo, a town in Gryfinie County, West Pomeranian Voivodeship. Police Captain Przemysław Wiaderski, press officer of the Gryfinie County Command of the State Fire Service, reported that the officer had ordered a vehicle to stop for a speed check. The car complied, but the following vehicle failed to maintain a safe distance and struck the rear of the officer’s car, resulting in the officer being hit. The driver, a severely pregnant woman, was taken to the hospital but was not in serious condition. The officer’s injuries were more severe; he was airlifted by the Air Rescue Service helicopter to a hospital in Szczecin. Fortunately, his life is not at risk.
Common Causes of Traffic Incidents
According to the police, “tailgating” is “one of the common reasons for road accidents and collisions.” This occurs when a following driver moves very close behind the preceding vehicle while the front driver stays within speed limits. “It is clear that such a driver violates a basic safety rule by failing to keep an adequate distance between vehicles, which can lead to dangerous incidents,” the police stated. Under the updated traffic regulations for highways and express roads, drivers must keep a distance measured in meters not less than half the speed in kilometers per hour of the vehicle they are traveling. For example, a driver traveling at 120 km/h on an expressway should maintain at least a 60‑meter gap behind the vehicle ahead.
