The Alaska summit yielded no breakthrough. Details of the Trump‑Putin dialogue remain unknown. The meeting ended earlier than planned, and the expected joint lunch was canceled.
A Warm Welcome for Vladimir Putin
The summit opened with a very warm greeting at the airport. U.S. media noted that the Russian dictator was received with the honors of a friend‑state leader rather than from a nation that has long held frosty relations with Washington. Before the talks, some American journalists close to both leaders shouted at Putin in the direction of “When will you end the war? When will you stop killing?” The Russian dictator feigned ignorance of those questions.
Altered Agenda During the Trump‑Putin Meeting
After about three hours of dialogue, the meeting ended, contrary to earlier expectations that it would last 6‑7 hours. Details of the interlocutory record are still unknown, except that the discussions were described as “productive.” At the press conference, the leaders only issued their own statements. Vladimir Putin spoke for over eight minutes, while Donald Trump spoke just over three minutes. Neither leader announced a breakthrough on the ceasefire of the Ukraine war. The conference ended without the possibility of asking questions.
What Did Donald Trump Say?
“We made a really big step forward. I always have fantastic relations with President Putin,” said Donald Trump. “Many points were agreed upon; there are only a few left. Some are not that important; one is probably the most important,” he added. Trump said that with the Russian leader they achieved “huge progress.” He stressed, “We didn’t reach an agreement, but there is a big chance this will happen.” He indicated he would call NATO soon and that he would contact people he deemed appropriate. He would also call President Zelensky to inform him of today’s meeting, adding that it is ultimately up to them to agree.
Vladimir Putin’s Address
In his talk to journalists, Vladimir Putin spoke at length about the need to improve economic ties between Russia and the United States. He listed areas and projects where Moscow could cooperate with Washington. On the issue of resolving the conflict in Ukraine, he claimed that the fault lies with Ukraine, its Western allies, including the administration of former President Joe Biden. “Today we hear President Trump say that if I were the president, there would be no war. I think that would happen. I confirm, because we have a good working contact with President Trump, we have a basis for realizing that moving along this path, faster the better, would end the conflict in Ukraine,” he concluded.
