Trump’s Tweet After Meeting With Putin: “Ceasefires Often Falter Under Time”

President Donald Trump praised the meeting with Vladimir Putin as “outstandingly successful” and confirmed he will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday.

President Donald Trump on his talk with Vladimir Putin

It was a great and very successful day on Alaska! The meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin went outstandingly well, as did the late‑night phone conversation with Ukrainian President Zelensky and various European leaders, including the NATO Secretary‑General. Everyone agreed that the best way to end the terrible war between Russia and Ukraine is a direct peace agreement that would conclude the war, rather than merely a ceasefire which often does not stand the test of time. President Zelensky will come to Washington, to the Oval Office, on Monday afternoon. If everything goes well, we will arrange a meeting with President Putin, potentially saving the lives of millions of people.

Volodymyr Zelensky on the Trump‑Putin Summit

We had a long and substantive discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump. We began with face‑to‑face talks before inviting European leaders. The discussion lasted over an hour and a half, including about an hour of our bilateral talk with President Trump. We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. Ukraine stresses that key issues can be discussed at the leadership level and that a trilateral format is suitable. He will also meet Trump on Monday in Washington to “discuss all details concerning ending killings and war.”

The summit did not bring a breakthrough. It began with a warm welcome at the airport. American media noted that the Russian dictator was received with honors as a leader of a friendly state, not a country that has remained in very cold relations with Washington for many years. The meeting itself lasted shorter than planned, and the anticipated joint lunch did not take place. After about three hours, the discussion concluded. At the press conference, the leaders only issued statements and did not announce any decisions regarding a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine.
