A1 Highway Crash: Experts Reveal Harrowing Car Modifications – Indictment Fragment Leaked

Prosecutors accuse 34‑year‑old Sebastian M. of causing a fatal A1 motorway crash that killed a three‑member family by modifying his car to exceed 300 km/h.

Investigations into Sebastian M.

Portal Fakt.pl reports that the roughly one‑million‑zloty BMW, which was leased and used by Sebastian M. to cause the fatal A1 crash, had been previously modified. Engine control systems were tampered with, removing the factory speed limiter and boosting engine power. Additionally, M. permanently installed an anti‑radar device – a violation. These modifications enabled him to reach speeds approaching jet speed. According to the indictment, investigators found that right before the crash he was traveling 315‑329 km/h. The legal speed limit on the motorway was 140 km/h.

Victims Were Indifferent to the Suspect

Earlier fragments of the indictment were also released by the newspaper Rzeczpospolita. It stated that the victims traveling in a Kia were indifferent to the suspect. Even after seeing the burning vehicle, he did not move from the spot where his own car had stopped on the motorway. He did not attempt to help the people trying to escape the burning car. Witness testimony indicated that Sebastian M. had worn a reflective vest, crossed energy‑absorbing barriers, and waited for further events, concentrating mainly on making phone calls to his own… and that he behaved as if he had driven into a trash can. Witness G. B. also noted that the suspect was irritated that the police had taken his driver’s license.

Charge against Sebastian M.

In July, the Katowice District Prosecutor’s Office forwarded the indictment to the District Court in Piotrków Trybunalski, charging Sebastian M. with causing an accident on the A1 motorway near Sierosław in September 2023. He allegedly collided with a Kia driven by a couple with a four‑year‑old child, killing all three aboard. Shortly after the incident, he fled to Germany and then to the United Arab Emirates. In May, he was returned to Poland. He denies his guilt and faces up to eight years in prison.
