Harvesting in the Wkra River near Żuromin yielded about 600 kilograms of dead fish, prompting a ban on entering the water and bathing in the river. The Mazovia Governor responded to the crisis.
Ecological Catastrophe in Mazovia
In the Wkra River near Żuromin, roughly 600 kilograms of dead fish were collected. Further removal of the fish is currently required. Governor Mariusz Frankowski convened an urgent meeting of the Mazovian Regional Crisis Management Team. Investigations reveal that the fish mortality is primarily occurring in the Żuromin County municipalities and is caused by low oxygen levels or absence of oxygen in the river. The Regional Crisis Management Center is coordinating with local authorities and services.
Mazovia Governor: We Are Prepared
In response to concerning reports, I convened the regional crisis management team to ensure the flow of information and determine the extent of needed governmental assistance. We are collaborating with local municipalities along the Wkra and are ready to provide further support, as stated in my social media post. I also emphasized that “the low oxygen level in the Wkra River in Żuromin County is a challenge to the ecosystem and a threat to residents”.
Water Samples Taken for Testing
According to reports from residents of Lubowidz about fish dying due to lack of oxygen, local authorities, the State Fire Service, and the Volunteer Fire Service responded by oxygenating the water. High air temperatures hinder the efficiency of this process. Samples were taken from Lubowidz, Brudnice, and Poniatowo. Field tests confirmed that despite high water levels in many sections, oxygen was low or entirely absent. No oil or municipal substances were detected in the water. The dead fish were retrieved by firefighters from PSP and OSP, and members of the Polish Fishing Association. It is forbidden to use Wkra water, enter it, or bathe in it until lifted. Detailed results of the samples will be available after the weekend.
