Stealing of MiG‑29 Parts from Hungary’s NATO Base Declared a “Military Catastrophe”

Parts for the MiG‑29 fighters were stolen from one of Hungary’s military airbases, prompting authorities to launch an investigation.

Hungary. MiG‑29 Components Stolen

Parts for the MiG‑29 fighters were stolen from one of Hungary’s military airbases, triggering an investigation by security services.

How the Theft Took Place

Thieves reportedly cut through the fence of Hungary’s most important military airbase in Kecskemet, drove onto the base in their vehicle, and then loaded stolen components of the communication and tracking systems used for Russian aircraft.

Ministry of Defense Confirms Incident

The Ministry of Defense acknowledged the event but declined to comment. “Police have initiated an investigative procedure; for the benefit of the investigation, we cannot provide further details,” the ministry said in a statement, with local police also confirming the incident.

Opposition Crying Out in Alarm

Former chief of the Hungarian army, now an adviser to the Tisza opposition, General Romulusz Ruszinski‑Szendi, warned that the theft is more than a security lapse. “Access to Hungary’s most crucial airbase is, as he described it on a social‑media post, a military catastrophe linked to state secrets,” he said. Hungary stopped using MiG aircraft in 2010, replacing them with several Swedish Gripen jets, and has since been awaiting a buyer.
