Media: The Trump‑Putin‑Zelensky meeting could take place this week
After his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, Donald Trump held a video conference with European leaders, during which he summarised his discussion with the Russian dictator and addressed other matters related to the war in Ukraine. He also announced that he intends to bring about a trilateral meeting, which would involve President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the Axios investigation, the United States President indicated that such a meeting would occur on Friday, August 22.
Volodymyr Zelensky is ready for a meeting with Putin
The Ukrainian president conveyed that he agrees to a meeting with Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. He intends to discuss the details with the host of the White House first, so he will travel to Washington on Monday, August 18. He announced this on Telegram following a phone call with Trump, saying, “I support President Donald Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, America, and Russia. Key issues can be discussed at the leader level and a trilateral format is suitable.” He added, “All details will be discussed with President Trump in Washington on Monday. I thank you for the invitation.”
Maximalist claims
According to Axios sources, during the August 15 summit in Alaska, Vladimir Putin was reported to have pushed “maximalist claims” regarding Ukrainian territories. Trump reportedly told European leaders that Russia demands Kyiv hand over the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, including areas not yet occupied by Russians, as well as freezing the front line in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. Putin was also said to suggest that ceasefire in those regions would occur if Ukraine withdrew from Donetsk and Luhansk. This proposal would mean Kyiv ceding far more land than Russia has secured.
