Robert Bąkiewicz was accused by the Gorzów Wielkopolski District Prosecutor’s Office of allegedly insulting a border guard. His lawyer Krzysztof Wąsowski has condemned the charges, claiming a lack of evidence and alleging political motivation behind the case.
Allegations Against Robert Bąkiewicz
On Monday, August 18, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gorzów Wielkopolski presented charges against right‑wing activist Robert Bąkiewicz. Bąkiewicz heard today that he was accused of allegedly insulting a border police officer, according to his lawyer Krzysztof Wąsowski.
Insult of a Border Guard Officer in Slubice
The accusations stem from an incident that occurred on June 29 on the border bridge in Slubice. Prosecutors determined that the activist insulted a border guard officer. He could face a fine, restriction of liberty, or up to one year imprisonment. Bąkiewicz, founder of the Border Defense Movement, was present at the Polish‑German border as part of so‑called citizen patrols.
Lawyer Denies the Insult
Robert Bąkiewicz’s attorney said that his client and the defense were unable to review the evidence. Wąsowski added that, in the prosecutor’s view, Bąkiewicz used an insulting word. “The problem is that Mr. Bąkiewicz did not utter such a word, though it was heard by a guard who believed it was directed at him. We are confident that there is a recording of the utterance. If any evidence other than the guard’s testimony appears, Mr. Bąkiewicz will respond,” the lawyer said.
Bąkiewicz on Political Pressure
Bąkiewicz also commented on the prosecutor’s actions, claiming that the decision to charge him was politically motivated. He alleged that a campaign against him was being led, allegedly involving Premier Donald Tusk and Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek. “The District Prosecutor’s Office in Gorzów Wielkopolski is being influenced by political forces,” he said. “I question why I am being held in Gorzów, not Berlin? I jestingly and seriously make this point, as it seems improbable that I am being accused. No insulting word was uttered, and it was not documented. The fact that they keep me away from the border shows the purpose of their actions. We must remain silent and not defend the nation against mass migration.”
