Cooling Turn in Poland. The “Kyra” Anticyclone Brings Relief. Is it the End of Heatwaves?

The weather is changing in Poland due to the anticyclone “Kyra”, which brings sudden cooling. IMGW has revealed how long this might last.

Weather on Monday

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) informed that after a hot weekend, cooling will arrive. The responsible system will be the “Kyra” high pressure, which on Monday 18 August will at times cause extensive cloud cover across eastern Poland. The change will also be apparent in temperature, as synoptists expect thermometers to show maximums of about 20 °C over the sea and in subalpine and northeastern regions, up to 25 °C in the west. Winds will be weak and moderate, though in the north they may become gusty from the northwest and north during periods.

Will the Heatwaves Return?

Temperatures are expected to rise on Tuesday and Wednesday, with maximums ranging from about 20 °C over the sea and 23 °C in the northeast up to 27 °C in the west. It will be even warmer on Wednesday, as thermometers will read from 22 °C over the sea and 25 °C in the northeast to 29 °C in central and southern areas. On Thursday, synoptic forecasters at IMGW anticipate a return of heatwaves in the southeast, where temperatures up to 31 °C are forecast. It will be slightly cooler in central regions, where temperatures may be around 24 °C, and the coldest point will be over the sea, with thermometers reading about 19 °C. However, Thursday will also bring moderate to heavy cloud cover, which will bring storms to southern Poland.

Long-Term Weather Forecast

IMGW published a long-term weather forecast indicating that on Friday 22 August the maximum temperature will be 20–21 °C across the predominant area of the country. This pattern will continue in the coming days until Monday, when, from the afternoon, a warm front will move into Poland and begin shifting northward.
