Warsaw launches a new public‑transport fare system in 2027, enabling card and phone payments, personal travel accounts, and a phased device rollout while retaining paper tickets and the City Card until 2029.
New Fare System Overview
Warsaw signed an agreement to implement a new fare system, scheduled to launch in September 2027. Passengers are expected to pay by card and phone, with individual accounts, a travel planner, and a phased replacement of devices while retaining paper tickets and the City Card until 2029.
Contract with Polish Mint
The Warsaw Metropolitan Transport Authority signed on August 19, 2025, a contract with Polish Mint S.A. to implement the new Warsaw Fare System. The city announces that after nearly 30 years, the method of paying public transport fares will change. The first features are set to go live in 2027.
Implementation Timeline
The new system will be launched in September 2027, and full functionality is expected by March 2029 – during which the old and new systems will operate in parallel. The scope of work includes, among other things, the creation of a central system, mobile application, passenger portal, and travel planner.
Deployment of Fare‑Collection Devices
As part of the project, approximately 13,000 new fare‑collection devices will be installed in Warsaw Public Transport vehicles and metro stations. Installation completion is scheduled for 2029.
Future Ticketing and Account Features
Passengers will be able to purchase tickets and manage transport‑related affairs via an individual account – through the app and portal. One‑time and time‑based tickets bought on the new devices will be linked to the used payment medium (card, phone, or NFC‑enabled watch). Traditional forms will remain: paper tickets with QR codes and plastic City Cards.
Check‑In/Check‑Out Fare Model
In the long term, the system aims to calculate fares in a check‑in/check‑out model and charge the most advantageous fee for the passenger – with a daily limit no higher than the price of a daily ticket.
Contract Details and Duration
The contractor was selected via a competitive dialogue process. The Polish Mint contract value reported in industry analyses is roughly 348.3 million PLN gross (283.2 million PLN net), and the agreement – according to market statements – lasts until September 19, 2037.
