Sensational Discovery in the Tatras: Not Everyone Will Be Able to See It – “Extremely Difficult Sections”

A 116‑metre waterfall, unseen and unmapped until now, has been uncovered in the heart of Slovakia’s Tatras by climber‑instructor Martin Murar. The year‑round cascade, possibly taller than the country’s current tallest fall, lies on a new route that only seasoned alpinists are allowed to tackle.

New Waterfall Discovered in the Tatras

During a press conference on Tuesday (August 19), climbing instructor Martin Murar revealed that a waterfall—previously invisible on all available maps—was uncovered in the core of Slovakia’s High Tatras. The year‑round fall, which never dries up and features a short cascading segment, measures a staggering 116 metres and may be higher than the presently recognized tallest on the country, Kmetov Waterfall.

New Waterfall at 1,939 m Elevation

Murar found the cascade on a hike while setting out a new climbing track to the Strzeleck Tower, at an altitude of 1,939 m above sea level. Though the find was made six years ago, he only released the information publicly now after gathering documentation and conducting measurements. He has named the find Low and High Strzelecki Waterfall (Dolny i Wysny Strelecky Vodopad) and notes the unusual fact that the waterfall pours directly from the earth.

The Route is Only for Experienced Climbers

The waterfall sits on a new climbing path leading to the top of Strzeleck Tower. The route consists of twelve sections, each reserved exclusively for seasoned climbers. It involves extremely challenging parts that demand matching skill and experience. The best starting point is the Hrebienok mountain lodge on the Smokowicka Saddle. The whole trail takes about five hours, with a return taking roughly 2½ hours.
