Drone Explosion in Osiny: Polish Official Calls It a Russian Provocation

A military drone shattered near Osiny, and Poland’s Defence Minister has termed the incident a deliberate provocation by Russia amid tense peace negotiations.

Poland’s Defence Minister Blames Russia for the Drone Incident

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz declared the drone explosion a Russian provocation, stressing that the attack occurred at a critical time when peace talks continue and hope remains that the war could eventually end. He described Russia’s strategy as a “provocative, hybrid warfare strategy” and underscored Poland’s investment in systems designed to prevent similar incidents in the future.

General Malinowski Calls the Drone a “Dron‑Wabik”

In the early hours, an object exploded close to Łuków, identified by Lieutenant General Dariusz Malinowski as a “dron‑wabik” – a drone without a combat nose but carrying a shrapnel payload. Helicopters were dispatched to confirm no further detonations, and Malinowski noted the drone was “highly difficult to detect.” He suggested it flew low to avoid Polish radar and that the engine, made in China, was widely available.

National Forces Raised to Readiness Level

Later that night, alerts were received that western Ukrainian units had been attacked by drones. Polish forces activated their standard containment procedures at around 22:00, deploying detection systems, missile‑fighting units, and an Mi‑24 helicopter to patrol the Ukrainian border. The operation concluded around midnight, with no signs of anomalous activity identified.

Drone Explosion in Osiny

At approximately 02:00 on Wednesday, fragments of a military drone fell onto a cornfield in Osiny, Podlaskie Voivodeship. The device detonated, causing glass breakage in nearby structures. Initial analysis of radar logs indicated no incursions into Polish airspace from Ukraine or Belarus, and no violation of boundaries was recorded last night.

Prosecutor Confirms an Explosion Occurred

Prosecutor Grzegorz Trusiewicz confirmed that the recovered drone components contained explosive materials, though the exact type, quantity, and composition remain unknown. An additional forensic technician will further examine the device. He also reported a 5‑6‑metre‑diameter crater with a depth of roughly 50 cm, suggesting the explosion likely occurred near the ground rather than in the air.
