Speculation swirls over a mysterious object that crashed into an Osiny cornfield last night, with officials still unconfirmed whether it was a rogue drone amid regional tensions.
What Fell in the Cornfield in Osiny?
Speculation is ongoing about what actually fell in the town of Osiny in the Lublin region during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. So far there has been no official confirmation. According to unofficial findings from Rzeczpospolita, it could have been an Iranian unmanned platform of the type Shahed‑131 or 136 (in Russian terminology Gieran‑1 and Gieran‑2). Meanwhile, the War News PL channel on X compared photographs of the wreck found in Lublin with images of an engine from a Russian drone that was discovered some time ago on Moldovan territory.
Expert on Explosions in Lublin
Adam Świerkowski of Defence24.pl was a guest on TVN24. “The situation is so strange that a potential breach of Polish airspace would normally follow mass attacks from the Russian side toward the Ukrainian side. From what I know, there was no such event that night, so here we have a situation where only a single drone crossed our border and would likely have an intentional character,” he said. “There is one drone, probably Russian, possibly produced in Russia or Iran. On the other hand, it could also be a smuggled drone or a homemade construction as part of sabotage,” he added.
Many Things Are Unclear
“A lot of things are unclear here. From the engine photos we see that it is indeed a design that could be the propulsion unit for UAVs like the Gieran, Shahed, Harpia, but it could also be a construction made somewhere locally, as these types of engines are widely available on the civilian market. Looking closely, we see it is 1:1 in certain components,” he explained. “We see similar outgoing tubes (…), which in the case of Shaheds are not welded at the angle. On the other hand, one must remember that the production of Gieran, Shaheds and such UAVs in Russia is aimed at creating the cheapest possible drone, so it could simply be something made at the cheapest available method at the moment,” he clarified.
Prosecutor’s Office on the Incident in Lublin
Concerning the incident, the prosecutor’s office has already spoken. “At this moment we are not able to say what object fell in the cornfield. It will be possible after detailed investigations. There is suspicion that this is a military drone,” said prosecutor Grzegorz Trusiewicz of the Lublin District Prosecutor’s Office during a press conference. “There is suspicion that it is a military drone, possibly civilian. The first look does not seem to indicate that it is a smuggled drone. If I can provide more precise information, we will do so,” he added.
