A1 Accident: Will Sebastian M. Remain in Custody? Court Rules

The court has upheld the detention of suspected driver Sebastian M., who faces up to eight years in prison for a fatal crash that killed three people on the A1 motorway.

Sebastian M. will remain in detention. The defense’s appeal against the decision extending preventive detention was dismissed, as announced by court spokesperson Piotrkowskie Okręgowe Tribunals Judge Agnieszka Leżańska, quoted by IAR. It was noted that the man will stay in temporary detention at least until 24 December. His trial is set to begin on 9 September. He faces up to eight years in prison for causing a fatal road accident by reckless driving.

Accident on the A1

An accident occurred on 16 September 2023. Sebastian M. was driving a BMW at approximately 330 km/h on the A1 motorway, where the speed limit is 140 km/h. Investigators say a vehicle modification enabled this excessive speed. The driver then collided with a KIA carrying a family of three—a married couple with a five‑year‑old son. None of the occupants survived.

Search for the BMW Driver

Prosecutors determined that Sebastian M. failed to render assistance to the victims and instead called his father. Shortly thereafter, the suspect fled to Germany and then via Turkey to the United Arab Emirates, where he was detained on a previously issued Interpol red notice.
