The Konin hospital temporarily halted new admissions to its oncology department due to delayed payments from the National Health Fund, but hospital officials say patient consultations continue and new cases are gradually being added.
Problems at the Konin Hospital
On Tuesday, the chief nurse Maria Wróbel announced to the Polish Press Agency that new admissions to the oncology ward had been temporarily stopped; only patients already registered could be admitted. The decision was linked to delays in the National Health Fund’s payment for the second quarter, leading some media outlets to speculate that the oncology department was entirely shut down and non‑functional.
Hospital: Patients Was/Are Being Consulted
On Thursday, Krystyna Brzezińska, director of the Wojewódzki Szpital Zespolony w Koninie, stated that patients previously directed to the oncology ward for eligibility assessment for drug programs were and continue to be preliminarily consulted and evaluated by specialists in clinical oncology. Those preliminarily qualified for drug program admission were informed of the possibility to join the program at this hospital or at other centers where treatment could commence sooner. In many cases, doctors from the regional hospital personally arranged admission dates at external oncology wards.
Facility: Increasing the Number of Newly Admitted Patients
Given the National Health Fund’s complex declaration of disbursement of funds, the hospital decided to gradually increase the number of newly admitted patients. According to the statement, from January to July the oncology ward treated 4,280 patients in total, averaging 611 per month. As of August 20, 2025, 385 patients were receiving treatment. Between January and July 2025, 69 new patients were qualified for drug programs, continuing treatment for those already enrolled.
