Suspected of a brutal campus murder, Mieszko R. will now undergo another psychiatric observation starting September 1, as announced by the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office. The decision follows an expert review and reflects prosecutors’ strategy to treat him as a mentally ill offender.
New psychiatric observation scheduled
On 1 September, Mieszko R. will be sent to a psychiatric observation period following a forensic expert’s assessment, according to the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office.
Background of psychiatric assessments
He had previously been examined at the psychiatric ward of a correctional facility in Poznań before this latest assessment.
Potential placement at Warsaw Forensic Psychiatric Clinic
Investigators are considering the Forensic Psychiatric Clinic at the Warsaw Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology, a modern facility led by Prof. Janusz Heitzman, for his observation.
Other possible facilities
Alternatives include the Forensic Psychiatric Unit at Dr. J. Babiński Hospital in Łódź or the Regional Forensic Psychiatry Centers in Starogard Gdański and Branicach, with decisions based on security level and bed availability.
Alleged murder at Warsaw University
Prosecutors accuse Mieszko R. of breaking into the Warsaw University campus on May 7 with an axe, assaulting several people, attempting to kill a campus security guard, and facing charges of assaulting a doorman, desecrating her body, and violating a policeman’s bodily integrity. If found sane, a life sentence may be imposed.
