Unexpected changes in the latest poll. Has the scandal harmed?

The latest United Surveys poll for Virtual Poland shows a modest reshuffling of support among Poland’s major parties, with the ruling coalition edging higher, the opposition decline, and a slight erosion of the duopoly—an outcome that experts say may indicate the KPO scandal has not profoundly shaken the political landscape.

Which party holds the highest support

Coalition for the Citizen (Koalicja Obywatelska) secured 28.1% in the latest United Surveys poll for Virtual Poland, marking a rise of 2.3 percentage points compared to the survey conducted between 25 and 27 July. Law and Justice (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość), which had been the leader in the previous study, saw a decline of 0.9 points, remaining at 27.4%.

Significant drop in support for Grzegorz Braun’s party

Confederation again took the third spot with a result of 17.3%, nearly identical to the previous 17.4%. Left (Lewica) entered the Sejm with 5.5%, down by 1.2 points. Downstream positions were held by PSL (3.6% – down 0.1) and Together Party (3.1% – down 0.5). Confederation of the Polish Crown saw a notable drop, receiving only 3.1% – 2.3 points less. Polskę 2050 garnered 2.6%, a decline of 1.5 points for Szymon Hołowni’s grouping.

If the poll results were reflected in the elections, the Sejm would include four parties

The seat distribution would approximate: Coalition – 174, Law and Justice – 169, Confederation – 99, Left – 18. No single coalition would hold an absolute majority. The poll involved 1,000 respondents between 13 and 16 August.

Prof. Dudek: “Weakening of the duopoly”. Did the KPO scandal hurt?

Professor Antoni Dudek, commenting on the poll, emphasized that the changes are not significant. “For months, a trend has persisted where the two strongest forces do not exceed 30% support,” he said, indicating the weakening of Poland’s duopoly. He noted that Poles are following national politics less closely amid holidays and global events. “If this trend continues into autumn, it will become clear that the KPO scandal has not caused the dramatic surge expected,” he added.

Doubts surrounding the use of KPO funds

Last week concerns surfaced regarding the allocation of money from the National Recovery Plan. Media reports suggested that funds earmarked for the development of the hotel, restaurant, and gastronomic sector were being diverted by some firms to yachts, saunas, or coffee machines. Investigations into alleged irregularities in KPO grant disbursements were launched by the Warsaw Regional Prosecutor’s Office and subsequently taken over by the European Prosecutor’s Office. A comprehensive report on the utilisation of KPO funds is expected in September.
