In a recent poll, Polish voters overwhelmingly chose President Karol Nawrocki to manage talks with the United States, while a high‑level summit in Washington left Poland unrepresented.

SW Research Finds Polish Preferences for U.S. Communications

Commissioned by Onet, the SW Research team surveyed who in Poland should be responsible for contacts with the U.S. administration and directly with President Donald Trump. Forty‑eight point six percent of respondents selected President Karol Nawrocki, while 28.4% favored Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Twenty‑three percent said they had no opinion. The study was conducted from August 19‑20 via online interviews, sampling 823 adults nationwide.

Summit Without a Polish Leader

On Monday, August 18, Donald Trump met with Volodymyr Zelensky and leaders of the most powerful European states. No Polish representative appeared at the White House meeting. Karol Nawrocki addressed the issue during an adviser‑appointment ceremony: “I want to reassure everyone. In the past week I participated in two talks with Donald Trump and European leaders, outlining Poland’s clear stance on the lack of trust in Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federation. Today we are forming a ‘coalition of the willing’. In that coalition the Polish government represents us, and President Zelensky invited those European leaders,” he said. The president is slated to meet Trump on September 3 at the White House.

Government Spokesman: Trump Invites to the White House

Press Secretary Adam Szlapa emphasized that on Monday in Washington, leaders did not gather under the “coalition of the willing.” “If the president decides to take responsibility for such an episode, even on behalf of Poland, that responsibility must come with all its consequences. It is not enough to proclaim participation in an important meeting—one must actively negotiate that format. We also aimed to avoid escalations and difficult relations,” he said. He noted that “Trump invites to the White House, or the current U.S. president,” and cautioned that claims that another president, such as Zelensky, is making the invitation require sharper international political understanding.

The White House Presses for Zelensky’s Meeting with Putin

The White House announced that Donald Trump and his national security team are working vigorously to arrange a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky. The Kremlin stated it is ready for talks with Ukraine that would include security guarantees. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, however, said that negotiations over the meeting of the two presidents should involve experts.
