Former Prime Minister Karol Nawrocki will make Poland’s first presidential visit to the United States on September 3 for a historic bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump, before proceeding to an official audience with the Pope in the Vatican on September 5.
Visit to Washington, then to the Vatican
On September 3, Karol Nawrocki will travel to Washington, D.C. for what will be the first foreign visit of Poland’s president. He will meet President Donald Trump for a bilateral discussion. Nawrocki expects Trump to take him seriously, noting that Trump has not met every European leader so close to his inauguration. “Trump wants to talk to the Polish president and treat his voice with weight,” said Paweł Szefernaker, Head of the President’s Office, on Channel Zero. After returning from Washington, Nawrocki will visit the Vatican, where he will hold an official audience with the Pope on September 5.
Invitation from Trump
On August 9, Szefernaker reported that President Trump had invited Nawrocki via a congratulatory letter sent on the day of the inauguration. Nawrocki, who had already promised during the campaign that he would visit the United States at the start of his presidency, said in an April debate, “When I become president of Poland, I will first visit Washington to strengthen our international relations and fulfill what former President Donald Tusk’s administration did not.”
Meeting with the U.S. President during the campaign
Prior to his candidacy, Nawrocki said the trip would include a stop in the Vatican. As President of the Institute of National Remembrance, he began his tenure with a visit to the Vatican, describing the past three years as “very good” for the IPN. He emphasized Poland’s need to become an economic, business, and security leader, and to strengthen EU–USA relations. He met Trump in early May, attending the National Day of Prayer event held in the White House Rose Garden.
