A significant fire has engulfed a building under construction in Toruń, Poland, causing widespread disruption and snarling traffic in the city center.
Major Blaze in Toruń
The Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service (PSP) in Toruń has reported a fire at a building undergoing renovation on Prosta Street in Toruń. Firefighters have confirmed that between 50 and 70 square meters of the roof have been destroyed.
City Center Paralyzed
The fire, which began around 12:30 PM, broke out on the roof of the newly constructed building. According to ototorun.pl, eight fire crews are currently battling the blaze. St. Capt. Przemysław Baniecki, spokesperson for the Provincial Headquarters of PSP Toruń, stated that the city center is effectively paralyzed, with several main streets closed and drivers stuck in heavy traffic.
New Fire Station Ablaze
TVP3 Bydgoszcz reports that the fire has spread to the construction site of the new headquarters for the State Fire Service in Toruń. ototorun.pl further clarifies that renovation and expansion work is currently underway at the Provincial Headquarters of PSP on Prosta Street. “This is a significant investment worth approximately 25 million PLN (Polish Zloty). The aim is to create twice the space for firefighters. The work was scheduled to be completed in 2027,” the portal reports.
