Construction of the new tram line to West Station is progressing, reshaping traffic at Grójecka, Bitwy Warszawskiej, and Banacha crossings, while bus routes will be re‑routed and service adjustments remain until year‑end.
Half of the tram star at the junction of Grójecka, Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 r., and Banacha is ready. Since Saturday, 23 August, the contractor of the tram route to West Station announced major changes to traffic here. Drivers will use the second lane of Grójecka, and the connection to the artery will be restored on Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 r.
At the intersection of Grójecka with Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 r. and Banacha streets, a so‑called “full star” is being built—a track arrangement that allows tram movement in all directions. Construction began at the start of the year. The contractor had closed one of the Grójecka lanes and the connection to Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 r., suspending tram traffic as well. Now half of the junction is ready, allowing the next construction phase to commence.
Change on Grójecka
During the night from Friday to Saturday, 22–23 August, tram works will open a lane of Grójecka toward Krakowska Avenue, and the works will be moved onto the track heading toward the city centre. Drivers will still use one lane in each direction. Temporary rope crossings over the tracks will remain at the same locations: behind the Hale Banacha stop and before Baśniowa Street. As before, toward Krakowska Avenue there will be two lanes, and toward the centre one.
Connection with Grójecka will be restored on Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 r.
The link to Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 r. will also operate with one lane in both directions. The section of Białobrzeska Street from Przemyska to the end of the block, as well as the portion of Opaczewska from Grójecka towards Szczęśliwka, will remain closed.
Banacha Closed
Both lanes of Banacha, from its intersection with Grójecka to Pawiński, will be closed. A detour will be set up along Pawiński and Dickensa Streets to Grójecka. From Pawiński, access to Banacha is only possible to the right. Buildings Banacha 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and Grójecka 89 and 81/87 can be reached via Banacha Street. Two traffic directions will be designated on the segment from Wolna Wszechnica to the residents’ parking lot.
Bus route changes
Lines 186 and 414, which depart from Banacha 04 toward Nowodworów and Bródno Podgrodzie, will travel on Pawiński to Dickensa—its current route. Line 157 will be directed on Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 r. to Grójecka in both directions. Lines 191 and N 43 will return to their standard routes via Grójecka to Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 r. Detour routes for lines 136, 154, 167, 172, 208, 521 and N 01 will remain unchanged. Trams on lines 7 and 9 will stay on shorter routes to Narutowicza Square. Lines Z‑9 and Z 14 will continue operating. Routes of lines 124, 703, 706, 707, 711, 715, 721, 728 and 733 will remain extended to PKP Rakowiec.
Work at the intersection
Work at the intersection involves more than just track construction. The contractor must first rebuild underground utilities. Ongoing work includes the overhaul of district heating mains, water, sewer, and telecommunication networks. Once these are complete, construction of the next part of the new track layout will begin. Traffic organization changes at the Grójecka, Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 r. and Banacha junctions will remain in effect at least until the end of the year.
Tram to Western Station
The tram track to West Station is part of a line that will connect Ochota and Wola with Mokotów and Wilanów. Along Bitwy Warszawskiej 1920 r., about 1.6 km of tram track is being built, with a tunnel under Park Pięciu Sióstr and Jerusalem Avenue. An underground stop will connect with train platforms, making transfers quicker and more convenient. The new route is expected to serve over 1.2 million passengers annually. The tram can carry more passengers than a bus and will run independently of road conditions. The trip from the station to Grójecka takes five minutes, to Narutowicza Square ten minutes, and to Politechnika metro station fifteen minutes.
