A young hawk has been found with all its fingers amputated, a deliberate act of cruelty that has left it unable to hunt or survive in the wild.
Albatros Foundation Shares Disturbing Discovery
The Albatros Foundation posted details on Facebook on Thursday (21 August) about a young hawk subjected to an act of pure cruelty. The organization stated, “This is bestiality in its purest form. Sometimes people throw away nests with chicks because they are annoyed, but most birds we rescue are victims of preventable incidents—like not using window stickers, leaving garbage, or letting cats roam freely. However, this hawk was not a victim of accident.”
Fatal Amputation of All Fingers
The young hawk suffered the amputation of all its fingers, a wound that has condemned it to a slow death. “It was intentionally maimed. Someone captured it, cut off all its fingers, and left it to starve. Some birds can adapt to such injuries, like the gull we recently released, which could still forage. But hawks rely entirely on their claws to hunt and grasp food,” the foundation explained.
Hope for a Peaceful Future in Captivity
The foundation noted that the hawk, now weakened and disheartened, has been placed in a enclosure with Gaja. While it has learned to eat from a bowl, it will never return to the wild. “It knows its legs are useless, that it cannot defend itself,” they added, calling the act of violence unthinkable.
