In a groundbreaking move, Maków County Council proclaimed Jesus Christ as its new king on August 21, citing religious and historical grounds despite legal concerns.
Council Session Approves Resolution
On Thursday (August 21), a session in Maków Mazowiecki approved the resolution “Intronization of Jesus Christ as King of Maków County.” The justification stated that during a widespread crisis of faith and values, and in reference to over 1,000 years of Polish history where kings entrusted themselves to Divine Providence, the council now seeks Jesus Christ’s blessing for families, homes, and children. They entrusted him with governing their “small homeland,” surrendering to his authority, and believe he will manage daily affairs, family life, local government, and societal matters in accordance with God’s will, as per the original wording.
Legal Doubts Surround the Resolution
Despite the approval, the resolution raised legal questions. The county administration expressed concerns in an August 8 opinion: “Public authorities, including county councils, can only act within the bounds of the law. (…) The council cannot perform tasks not delegated by statute. (…) Designating a sacred patron involves religious and canonical law dimensions, and is undoubtedly a church procedure.” Ultimately, seven council members supported the resolution, while eight—including the mayor and deputy mayor—abstained. The resolution was deemed valid regardless of legal uncertainties, and June 21 was declared “Jesus Christ King of the County Day.” Previously, 300 residents signed the proposal.
Voivode to Review the Resolution’s Legality
However, the matter is not yet resolved. According to *Tygodnik Ostrołęcki*, the voivode will now scrutinize the resolution for compliance with Poland’s legal framework. This marks the first such event in the country, highlighting the intersection of religious tradition and state authority.
