The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued first-degree warnings for strong winds, storms, and potential water spouts across multiple Polish regions, with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h.
IMGW Warns of Strong Winds
Strong Wind Warnings Across Several Voivodeships
IMGW has issued first-degree warnings for strong winds in the Pomeranian, West Pomeranian, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Lubusz, Greater Poland, Lower Silesian, Łódź, and Masovian voivodeships. The agency forecasts average wind speeds up to 40 km/h, with gusts reaching 70 km/h from the northwest, it said.
Storms and Water Spouts Possible
IMGW also warns of storms, with first-degree alerts in force in the West Pomeranian and Pomeranian voivodeships. Storms are also possible in central Poland. “They will likely be isolated and unorganized, accompanied by rainfall of 10-15 mm and gusts of 50-55 km/h. On the Pomeranian coast, rainfall may reach 20-25 mm due to the ‘sea effect’ and the highest number of rain cells developing over the warm Baltic Sea and moving toward the shore,” the Institute emphasizes. “Despite generally weak kinematic conditions in this region, the low-level LCL height and wind shear predicted by some models up to 1 km could lead to water spouts,” it adds.
Saturday’s Weather Forecast
Saturday (August 23) will see moderate to heavy cloud cover, with scattered rain showers progressing from the northwest into the country. Thunderstorms are possible in the north, west, and central regions, along with light hail. Coastal rainfall could reach up to 20 mm. In the southern mountain ranges, rain with snow is forecast, and high in the Tatra Mountains, snowfall may occur. Maximum temperatures will range from approximately 15°C on the coast and parts of the Pomeranian region to 20°C in the southeast. Winds will generally be moderate to occasionally gusty, coming from the west and northwest, with gusts up to 70 km/h. Overnight, cloud cover will be moderate overall, with scattered rain showers fading in the western regions. Thunderstorms may occur in the north, bringing rainfall up to 15 mm. Mountainous areas will see rain with snow, and the Tatra Mountains could experience snowfall. Minimum temperatures will range from 7°C to 10°C, with cooler conditions in the foothills (3°C to 5°C) and warmer temperatures near the coast (about 12°C). Winds will be light to moderate, occasionally gusty on the coast and south of the country, including during thunderstorms, from the west and northwest. Gusts in the Sudetes could reach 80 km/h, and in the Carpathians up to 70 km/h.
