Kasprowy Wierch is experiencing freezing temperatures and snowfall, marking the first such event in 15 years. However, warmer winds are expected to melt the snow later this week, according to meteorological data.
Frost and Snow on Kasprowy Wierch
Currently, temperatures on Kasprowy Wierch are three degrees below zero, though they are expected to rise slightly in the coming days, likely melting the initial snowfall. According to the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, snow cover at this time of year was last recorded in August 15 years ago. This does not signal the end of summer, as forecasts predict a warm wind known as “halny” by midweek, which will raise temperatures.
Challenging Conditions in the Tatra Mountains
The Tatra National Park warns in its tourist advisory that hiking conditions are unfavorable. In higher elevations of the Tatra Mountains, a thin layer of fresh snow has caused slippery trails. Fog is also present in some areas, reducing visibility. Trails in valleys are wet, slippery, and muddy, especially in forests, following recent rainfall.
Weather Forecast for Sunday
On Sunday, cloud cover will remain light in the afternoon and after sunset, while moderate to heavy showers are predicted in other regions. Thunderstorms are possible in the northeast, with rainfall totals of up to 15 mm, locally reaching 20 mm. Early morning fog in mountain valleys may limit visibility to about 200 meters. Maximum temperatures will range from 16 to 20°C, with cooler conditions in Podhale at around 13°C. Winds will be light to moderate, stronger along the coast with occasional gusts from west and northwest directions. In the Carpathians, gusts may reach 60 km/h, while thunderstorms could bring winds up to 65 km/h. Overnight, light to moderate cloud cover is expected, with heavy clouds and light showers possible in the north, east, and center. Minimum temperatures will range from 7 to 11°C, cooler in foothill regions at 3–5°C, and warmest near the sea at up to 14°C. Winds will be light, occasionally moderate in the north, and gusty near the sea during thunderstorms, originating from west and southwest.
