A pedestrian was seriously injured in a hit-and-run collision on Marszałkowska Street in central Warsaw. The drunk driver, a Georgian citizen, was apprehended by police less than an hour later after evading responsibility and driving with a damaged windshield.
Incident details
A serious collision occurred at 00:45 on a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights near Widok Street in central Warsaw. Witnesses reported that the driver of a Honda entered the crossing on a red light while other vehicles were stationary, striking a pedestrian who was thrown onto the road.
Driver’s escape and vehicle damage
Initially, the perpetrator stopped at a bus stop but soon left the scene without providing medical assistance to the injured pedestrian. The damaged vehicle, with a shattered windshield, was driven through the city center. An hour later, a patrol from the Surveillance and Patrol Department discovered the car on Aleja Jerozolimskie near Żelazna Street and halted it for inspection.
Preliminary investigation findings
The driver, a Georgian citizen, was found to have over 1.0 promil of alcohol in his system via a breathalyzer test. A Ukrainian man in the passenger seat had nearly 2 promil of alcohol. Both individuals were detained. Authorities are currently verifying their driving licenses.
Aftermath and injuries
The injured pedestrian, who sustained general bodily injuries, was transported to the hospital. Two lanes of Marszałkowska Street heading toward Bank Square were blocked following the accident. The Traffic Department’s accident response team was on site, conducting their procedures.
