US Vice President J.D. Vance highlights Trump’s aggressive diplomacy to end the war in Ukraine, emphasizing that it should not last longer than six months.
Vice President of the USA on Trump’s Diplomacy
US Vice President J.D. Vance acknowledged in an NBC News interview that President Donald Trump’s “aggressive, energetic diplomacy” in addressing the Ukraine war is not misleading him. “This war is in no one’s interest,” Vance stated, stressing that the US president is actively working to prevent further violence. During the interview, Vance referenced a conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who remarked that a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy is only possible “when the agenda is ready,” while clarifying that “the agenda is not ready at all.” When asked if Russia is misrepresenting Trump, Vance replied, “No. They show willingness and flexibility. We are discussing what is necessary to end this war—so it should not last longer.”
Six Months into the Ukraine War
Vance emphasized that Trump’s stance on the war should be appreciated domestically, noting that Americans should be proud of having a president who seeks to stop the bloodshed. He added, “Whether the war ends in three months or six months—let’s hope not longer—we should be proud of a president trying to prevent further violence.” Vance also mentioned Trump’s frustration with Washington’s perception of progress in negotiations with Russia, stating, “We will continue doing what we must to resolve this matter. I don’t think it will happen overnight.”
ISW: Kremlin Unwilling to Agree to Putin-Zelenskyy Meeting
American Institute of War Studies analysts recently reported that the Kremlin is likely skeptical about a Putin-Zelenskyy summit, citing concerns over reputational damage to the Russian leader. Such a meeting, they argue, could undermine Putin’s domestic justification for the “special operation” in Ukraine, as reported by Kremlin propaganda. This skepticism was noted during discussions at a Trump-Putin meeting on August 15 in Alaska and a Trump-Zelenskyy gathering on August 18 in Washington, which included other leaders like Rutte, von der Leyen, Starmer, Macron, Merz, Meloni, and Stubb.
