Early elections in Zabrze: Residents elect new mayor

Zabrze’s early elections concluded with Kamil Żbikowski winning a narrow majority over Ewa Weber to become the city’s new mayor.

Kamil Żbikowski becomes city’s new mayor

Żbikowski, representing the Lepsze Zabrze movement, secured victory in the second round of elections after defeating the candidate supported by the Civic Coalition. The vote gap between the two was minimal, with Żbikowski receiving 16,031 votes (50.17%) and his opponent 15,925 votes (49.83%). A total of 195 invalid votes were recorded. The winner emphasized the city’s need for dialogue, noting the slim margin of victory. Voter turnout exceeded 27% among Zabrze’s nearly 117,000 registered residents.

Who is Kamil Żbikowski?

“I would like us to be as happy, if not even more, about finishing this term as we are about achieving many things, and guiding this city toward a better future,” Żbikowski stated, citing TVN24. When asked about his priorities, he highlighted the urgency of concluding the privatization of Górnika Zabrze. He also vowed to fight for the construction of a university hospital, which was recently allocated to Gliwice. Żbikowski, a 38-year-old lawyer and independent politician, has served on Zabrze City Council since 2018. He ran for mayor in the 2018 and 2024 local elections but did not win either time.
