A PiS deputy sharply criticized the introduction of health education in schools, accusing it of promoting non-traditional norms and issuing warnings about potential ideological influences.
PiS Deputy on Drag Queens and “Freaks”
One week before the start of the new school year, bishops urged parents to reject the “demoralizing” health education classes, claiming the curriculum marginalizes marriage and family while failing to support young people in accepting their biological sex. PiS deputy Agnieszka Wojciechowska van Heukelom echoed these concerns on TVN24, stating, “I fully agree with Przemysław Czarnek. Parents, not drag queens or so-called ‘freaks,’ should make these decisions.” She argued that the term “freak” is not inherently offensive but refers to those who deviate from norms, adding that parents are protesting to remove their children from such lessons.
Host’s Shock at the Deputy’s Words
Rafał Wojda, the show host, expressed surprise at the term “freak,” emphasizing that the program is not meant to define moral or ethical norms. He reiterated that the deputy’s remarks should not be included, stating, “This is not the purpose of the program.”
Deputy’s Concerns About “Imposing Norms”
Wojciechowska van Heukelom highlighted concerns over the “invading policy” promoting specific ideas in schools. She questioned whether organizations would push unorthodox norms through the curriculum, though she could not name any specific groups or individuals.
Who Will Actually Teach Health Education?
The Ministry of Education’s decree outlines qualifications for health education instructors. According to the document, teachers must meet standards similar to others, such as holding a bachelor’s or master’s degree in health education or completing postgraduate studies in the field, alongside pedagogical training. Additionally, biology, physical education, or family life teachers, as well as medical professionals like doctors, dentists, or nurses, may qualify if they complete pedagogical coursework.
