With parliamentary elections approaching in two years, the ruling PSL coalition faces challenges maintaining power as recent polls indicate waning support for the party and potential shifts in political alliances.
PSL Eyes a New Coalition Partner?
Piotr Zgorzelski, a PSL politician, openly discussed the possibility of forming a coalition with Confederation in a social media post. He emphasized that their current coalition needs to “earn another term” and noted that if the coalition lacked seats, “negotiations with the liberal wing of Confederation” could become necessary. Zgorzelski added that this approach reflects a “broad perspective on political scenarios.”
Confederation Unimpressed by Zgorzelski’s Remarks
Confederation quickly responded to Zgorzelski’s comments on its official X profile, stating, “We don’t want anything from Avonu,” a reference to an internet meme. Witold Tumanowicz, a Confederation politician, remarked, “Mr. Marshal, please decide.” Tumanowicz later cited a previous interview with Zgorzelski in RMF FM, where the vice marshal stated, “No. In such a coalition, in such company, we thank you very much.” He also noted that Confederation and PiS “take democracy very seriously.”
PSL Explored Coalition Talks with PiS and Confederation
In June of this year, the portal Opolska360.pl revealed that PSL members received a survey from the party leadership asking, “If PiS and Confederation proposed forming a government with PSL, led by Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz as prime minister, should PSL accept this offer?” At the time, PSL’s spokesperson, Miłosz Motyka, dismissed the idea, saying, “There’s no need to look for a second opinion” on the matter. He also stated the survey included “different questions” and confirmed that “70% of party members support maintaining the current ruling coalition.” Motyka concluded that dissenting members were a “margin, really very small.”
