Munich has stunned its citizens by implementing a ban on chip sales after 8 PM in the university district, while also briefly restricting beer sales—a move criticized by local businesses and residents.
Restrictions on Chip Sales in Munich
Munich authorities introduced a restriction on selling chips after 8 PM in kiosks located in the university district near Ludwig Maximilian University, as reported by German media. This applies to five kiosks that remain open longer than others. The decision followed numerous complaints from residents about public space littering.
Beer Sales Restrictions Lifted
A similar ban on beer sales after 10 PM was imposed several weeks ago but was lifted on August 22 after less than two weeks. Munich Mayor Dominik Krause noted the restriction harmed local entrepreneurs and failed to satisfy residents. “Most of my sales happen after 10 PM. When other shops are closed, my business only begins,” said one local vendor, highlighting the impact of the temporary ban.
A Condition Imposed
The chip sales ban significantly improved cleanliness in the university district, according to the mayor. After lifting the prohibition, Krause urged sellers to maintain tidiness around their shops. “It’s unacceptable for glass shards to lie on sidewalks,” emphasized Krause, citing *Muenchner Merkur*. He added that the ban could return if public spaces become polluted again.
