Ukraine Condemns Woody Allen’s Participation in Moscow Film Festival. Calls It “Shame” and “Turned a Blind Eye to Atrocities”

Ukraine has strongly criticized American director Woody Allen for participating in a Moscow film festival, accusing him of ignoring Russian atrocities in the country for over a decade. The event, which promotes Moscow as an international creative hub, included appearances by actors and filmmakers like Mark Dacascos and Emir Kusturica.

Film Festival in Russia

The Moscow Film Festival aims to position the city as an international center for cinema enthusiasts. Among the guests are American actor and martial arts master Mark Dacascos and Serbian director Emir Kusturica, known for his pro-Kremlin stance. The event took place last year as well, showcasing films, hosting lectures, and organizing business forums.

Woody Allen at the Russian Festival

On August 24, American director Woody Allen participated in a festival dialogue with Russian director Fyodor Bondarchuk via an online link. The event was marketed as a “lecture-dialogue” where Allen shared reflections on film, life, inspirations, and professional ethics. A report by Nexta noted that Allen praised Russian cinema, mentioned his willingness to visit Russia, and even suggested filming a movie about feeling comfortable in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Ukraine’s Position

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement that Allen’s participation was a “shame and disgrace for the dedication of Ukrainian actors and filmmakers who have died or been injured at the hands of Russian aggressors.” Ukraine emphasized that Allen, by joining the “blood-soaked Moscow festival,” chose to “turn a blind eye to the atrocities Russia has committed in Ukraine daily for 11 years.” The statement added, “Culture must never be used to conceal crimes or serve as a propaganda tool.”
