Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek accused the KRS of flawed selection processes, claiming that non-judges in key courts now generate taxpayer-funded compensation claims under the European Court of Human Rights.
Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek Addresses KRS Meeting Over Flawed Judicial Procedures
Flawed Election Process and Taxpayer Compensation
On Tuesday, August 26, Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek attended a meeting of the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS). During the session, he stated that the council was elected under improper procedures, and each non-judge in the Supreme Court and the National Administrative Court “currently generates compensation from the state treasury due to rulings by the European Court of Human Rights.” He emphasized that this compensation is funded by Polish taxpayers and noted that merely attending the council’s session, regardless of the ruling, triggers such claims.
An Appeal to Judges to Leave the KRS Building
Żurek addressed the council members, asserting, “You bear shared responsibility for creating these positions in the Supreme Court and the National Administrative Court through procedures incompatible with the Polish constitution. As Minister of Justice and the Chief Prosecutor, I will use legal methods to ensure you leave this building.” He added that he understands professional missteps are human, but persisting in error is “a satanic matter,” urging judges to reflect on the consequences of their decisions and consider dissolving the institution.
