After recent cold days, a heatwave is set to hit Poland, bringing temperatures up to 32°C and prompting weather warnings from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management.
A heatwave is approaching
Cold days in recent days are giving way to a warming trend in Poland, driven by hot air masses entering from the southwest. Temperatures are already rising, with most of the country recording around 23-24°C on Wednesday (August 27). Mainly moderate cloud cover with clear spells was observed, though the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) explains that a warming effect will be felt in the afternoon. On Thursday (August 28), temperatures will surge significantly, reaching up to 31-32°C in the west and central regions due to tropical air masses. An atmospheric front moving in from the west on Thursday afternoon will bring thunderstorms, brief rainfall, and gusty winds.
Heatwaves expected on Thursday
The heat will persist through Friday, primarily affecting the southwest and central areas, where temperatures will remain above 28°C. Conversely, the northwest and west will experience cooler conditions, with temperatures not exceeding 22-23°C. Heavy rainfall is forecast for the western half of the country, with up to 9 mm expected in Greater Poland. The final weekend of the holiday season (August 30-31) will see more stable weather, with temperatures peaking at 26°C. Rainfall will be brief and scattered.
IMGW Warnings
In response to the anticipated high temperatures on Thursday (August 28), the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management released first and second-degree warnings. The orange alert (second-degree) will apply to Siemiatycki County in Podlaskie Voivodeship, southern and eastern parts of Masovian Voivodeship, entire Lublin and Świętokrzyska Voivodeships, northern areas of Podkarpackie and Małopolska Voivodeships, Radomszczanski County in Łódź Voivodeship, and most of Silesian Voivodeship (excluding Kłobuck and Żywiec counties). “Heatwaves are expected,” states the announcement. “Maximum temperatures will range from 28°C to 32°C during the day, and minimums from 17°C to 21°C at night.” A broader first-degree warning will cover Lubusz, Greater Poland, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeships, nearly all of Lower Silesian Voivodeship (excluding Jelenia Góra, Wałbrzych, and Kłodzko districts), all of Opole Voivodeship, Kłobuck County in Silesian Voivodeship, and parts of Łódź Voivodeship not under the orange alert, as well as the western and southern regions of Masovian Voivodeship.
