Construction of new pedestrian crossings on Marszałkowska Street in central Warsaw, aligned with the Złota axis and near Sienkiewicza, has begun, with adjustments to traffic flow and coordination with the “Green Marszałkowska” project.
New Crossings and Traffic Adjustments
New pedestrian crossings on Marszałkowska Street in the Złota axis and near Sienkiewicza are now under construction in central Warsaw. The latest phase of work started on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, with the traffic lane heading toward Bank Square temporarily narrowed to a single lane. This initiative is part of the “New Warsaw Center” program, synchronized with the ongoing reconstruction of the “Green Marszałkowska” project.
Connecting Key Areas with Cyclist Access
The new crossing along the Złota axis will link the vicinity of the Palace of Culture and Science, Central Square, and Zgoda Street, creating a clear pedestrian route in the city’s strict center. A dedicated bike path will accompany this crossing, allowing for level crossings across Marszałkowska Street. A similar solution is planned for Sienkiewicza Street, including a full pedestrian crossing with a bike lane.
Synchronized with Road and Infrastructure Projects
The initiative is coordinated with the road and traffic layout reconstruction under the “Green Marszałkowska” project. Work began in June 2025, with the schedule designed to allow the implementation of new crossings and the reorganization of pedestrian, cyclist, public transport, and vehicular traffic. Existing metro station entrances to Centrum remain accessible, as the former underground crossings continue to serve as access points to platforms and passageways.
Transforming the Złota–Zgoda Area
The Złota–Zgoda district is undergoing broader redevelopment through the “Złota and Zgoda” project, initiated in 2024. This includes expanded sidewalks, reconstructed plazas, tree plantings, and accompanying greenery. Beneath the former tunnel on Marszałkowska Street, a subterranean rainwater retention tank is planned to collect stormwater, supporting the drainage system of the revitalized district and reducing local flooding after heavy rains.
Future Benefits of the Project
The new crossing network—including the Złota axis and the Sienkiewicza crossing—aims to shorten access to bus stops, service facilities, and attractions in the city center. The investment will unify previously disconnected parts of the downtown area and shift daily traffic from underground to street level, improving accessibility and spatial clarity around Marszałkowska Street.
