Russian forces struck Kyiv with drones and missiles during the night of Wednesday to Thursday, targeting the Ukrainian capital. At least 14 people were killed, including children, and dozens injured. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the use of Russian ballistic missiles and drones is a “clear response” to global calls for a ceasefire and genuine diplomacy, emphasizing that Russia has chosen “ballistics over negotiation tables.” The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, announced that August 29 will be declared a day of mourning in the city. Russia also attacked several other Ukrainian regions, deploying approximately 600 long-range drones, of which a significant portion were intercepted or neutralized. Ukrainian forces shot down 26 of 31 missiles.

The Russian attack also targeted the European Union delegation’s headquarters in Kyiv. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the strikes during the night of bombings, stating that they hit civilian infrastructure and killed innocent people. She confirmed the EU delegation’s personnel were safe and urged Russia to immediately cease attacks on civilian infrastructure and engage in negotiations on a “just and lasting peace.” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha described the attack as a “direct violation of the Vienna Convention,” calling for global condemnation and solidarity with EU colleagues.
