Ukrainian military officials confirmed night attacks on two major Russian oil refineries, prompting emergency responses and raising concerns over energy infrastructure vulnerabilities.
Attack on Russian refineries
A Ukrainian military commander reported on Thursday morning via Telegram that two Russian refineries, Kuybyshev in Samara Oblast and Afipsky in Krasnodar Krai, were targeted during the night. The facilities process 7 million and 6.25 million tons of oil annually, respectively. “Gasoline is becoming a rare commodity, and fuel and oil burn quickly,” he added.
Reaction of Russian authorities
On Thursday morning, Samara Oblast authorities stated in a brief statement that “enemy unmanned aerial vehicles attacked the region.” Air defense and emergency services were mobilized, with temporary flight restrictions at Samara Airport and limited mobile internet access for safety. Krasnodar Krai confirmed that “one of the oil refinery facilities caught fire,” covering 20 square meters. The blaze was extinguished at 8:00 AM local time, with 63 personnel and 26 units of equipment involved in the response. Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry claimed that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 102 Ukrainian drones during the night of August 27 to 28.
Attack on Kyiv
A Russian attack on Kyiv occurred overnight, using drones, missiles, and Iskander ballistic missiles. Ukrainian authorities reported at least 10 fatalities. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Thursday morning that “people may still be trapped under rubble, and dozens were injured.” He criticized Russia’s use of the situation, stating, “Moscow exploits the fact that at least part of the world turns a blind eye to the murdered children and seeks justifications for Putin.”
