PiS, Poland’s ruling party, is launching an autumn political offensive ahead of elections, targeting unlawful migration and promoting a referendum on the issue, while mobilizing support and emphasizing its commitment to coalition agreements.
PiS’s Political Offensive
Manifestations Against Unlawful Migration
PiS has announced plans for a large demonstration in Warsaw on October 11, focusing on opposition to unlawful migration, the migration pact, and policies it claims threaten Poland’s well-being. President of the party Jarosław Kaczyński emphasized the need to achieve 40% support in upcoming elections, stating, “The president keeps talking about these 40% which we need to achieve.” A PAP source noted that a proposed referendum on migration could reach the Sejm by October, as part of this “autumn offensive.” The party’s program conference in Katowice at the end of September will further outline its strategy.
Referendum Petition Collection
PiS began collecting signatures for a referendum in October of last year, citing concerns over the risks unlawful migration poses to personal and economic security. Party officials aim to secure over 500,000 signatures to propose the referendum, with the question phrased as: “Are you in favor of rejecting the forced acceptance of unlawful migrants, which risks a decline in personal and economic security?” Despite mobilizing public support, a PAP source warned that parliamentary approval for the referendum is unlikely due to current Sejm dynamics.
The Government’s “New Opening”
According to media reports, the ruling coalition also plans a political offensive, with each minister set to present two to three key priorities at the start of September. A minister emphasized that the initiative aims not to revise the coalition agreement but to demonstrate forward progress: “We show plans and consistently implement them, whether through presidential approval or other means.” This move underscores efforts to align governance with the coalition pact’s promises, particularly unresolved agenda items.
