A Ukrainian journalist with Polish citizenship, Witalij Mazurenko, referred to the president as a “thug” during a Polsat News broadcast, prompting Zbigniew Bogucki, head of the presidential office, to call for constitutional reform to allow revoking citizenship in cases of naturalization, similar to practices in countries like the United States or France.
Bogucki strongly criticizes Mazurenko’s remarks
During a press conference following the Cabinet Council meeting on Wednesday, Zbigniew Bogucki stated that Mazurenko’s comment constituted a public insult to the president of the Republic of Poland. He emphasized that the current constitution prohibits revoking Polish citizenship in situations involving naturalization, unlike systems in the U.S., France, or Germany. Bogucki also argued that the president’s stance on revising the constitution is justified, urging the initiation of significant work to draft a new constitution for the Republic of Poland.
Mazurenko apologizes
Hours after the broadcast, Witalij Mazurenko published an apology on social media, expressing deep regret for his remarks in the “Debate with Gozdyra” program. He reaffirmed his respect for the national institutions, including the president of the Republic of Poland, and acknowledged the pain caused to those affected by his words.
