The U.S. has deployed eight warships and 4,500 Marines near several Central and South American nations, including Venezuela, citing a drug trafficking operation as the motive, while Venezuela accuses Washington of fabricating threats and pursuing imperialist goals.
U.S. Warships Deployed Amid Tensions
Eight U.S. Navy warships and 4,500 Marines have been dispatched to the vicinity of several Central and South American countries, including Venezuela. According to U.S. sources, this move is part of an operation targeting drug trafficking. However, Venezuelan authorities claim the U.S. is spreading a false narrative about drug-related threats and have alternative motives.
Venezuelan Defense Minister Condemns U.S. Accusations
Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino denounced U.S. claims as “grotesque and crude lies.” He stated there is no room for fear in the face of U.S. threats and urged Venezuelans to “defend their homeland.” Padrino also highlighted Venezuela’s effective efforts to combat narco-traffickers attempting to cross from Colombia into the country, calling U.S. actions a display of “North American imperialism.”
Trump Administration Accuses Maduro of Drug Cartel Involvement
The Trump administration accused Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of leading a drug cartel through its UN mission. Venezuelan authorities, however, warned that the U.S. might deploy even a nuclear-capable submarine in the region. Maduro ordered the mobilization of 15,000 troops along the Colombia border to “ensure peace in the region.” The U.S. recently increased the reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest to $50 million.
