On Thursday, August 28, 2025, a tragedy unfolded during rehearsals for the International Air Show in Radom when an F‑16 aircraft crashed, killing Major Maciej “Slab” Krakowian – one of Poland’s most experienced military pilots and the leader of the Tiger Demo Team Poland.

The accident occurred at approximately 19:30 at the Radom airfield. While performing an aerobatic maneuver, the F‑16 abruptly lost altitude, slammed into the runway, and erupted into flames. The pilot failed to eject. Rescue services rushed to the scene, but the pilot’s life could not be saved. No casualties were reported among bystanders, and the crash site was secured by the military and police.

Major Krakowian’s Career

Major Krakowian graduated from the “Orląt” School in Dęblin and spent his professional career with the 31st Tactical Air Base in Poznań‑Krzesin. There, he trained and flew F‑16s, participated in NATO Air Policing missions, and, after training in the United States, earned instructor qualifications for the aircraft. He was the face and leader of the F‑16 Tiger Demo Team Poland since 2015, representing Poland at prestigious air shows domestically and abroad. With nearly 1,400 flight hours, almost 1,200 of which were in the F‑16, he was honored in 2025 at the Royal International Air Tattoo in the UK with the “As the Crow Flies Trophy” for the best solo performance.

The Operational Command of Armed Forces issued a statement: “Farewell, Master.” Condolences were conveyed to his family and colleagues by state officials, including President Karol Nawrocki, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and Minister of Defence Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz. Colonel Krystian Zięć, cited by the media, emphasized that Major Krakowian was “one of the most talented and professional pilots in Polish aviation.”

In the wake of the tragedy, organizers of Air Show Radom 2025 decided to cancel the event. The planned shows on August 30 and 31 were set to be the largest of its kind in Poland, drawing tens of thousands of spectators.
