Ukrainian special forces allegedly crippled a Russian missile corvette near occupied Crimea using aerial drones and commando tactics, forcing it to withdraw from its patrol zone.

Ukrainian Intelligence Claims Destruction of Russian Missile Corvette

A Ukrainian military intelligence unit, “Duchy,” announced on Thursday (August 28) that it damaged a Russian warship on the Azov Sea. The unit stated that commandos operated near the occupied peninsula, using two aerial drones to disable the ship’s radar. Subsequently, the raiders attacked the vessel from the sea. The damaged ship is a Russian Bujan-M missile corvette. According to the intelligence command, the vessel was stationed in Tempa Bay, an area with potential for launching Kalibr missiles. After sustaining damage, the ship was forced to abandon its combat patrol area. DefenseExpress, an analytical Ukrainian portal, noted that Russia has three Bujan-M corvettes on the Black Sea, each capable of carrying up to eight missiles. The attacked ship will neither transport nor launch missiles until repairs are completed.

Kyiv Strike: Mayor Calls It “One of the Largest”

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko described the nighttime Russian attack as one of the largest to date, emphasizing its impact on civilians. Russian forces targeted residential blocks in the capital using hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, including ballistic Iskander missiles. Klitschko stated the attack aimed to terrorize civilians and noted it is challenging to justify the destruction of the city, attributing it solely to Russia’s intent to break Ukrainian resistance. The assault also damaged the European Union’s representative office in Kyiv. EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kovač criticized the attack, stating, “This is a clear signal that Russia rejects peace and chooses terror.”

EU Commission Chief Discusses Russian Attacks with U.S. and Ukrainian Presidents

Following the Russian attacks, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. She emphasized that Putin must return to the negotiating table, stating, “We must ensure Ukraine a fair and lasting peace through solid and credible security guarantees, to make the country a steel hedgehog.” Von der Leyen assured that Europe would fully fulfill its role, highlighting a 150 billion euro fund for defense investments. The fund offers preferential loans primarily for European firms but is also open to Ukraine. She added, “It will have a significant impact on strengthening the resilient Ukrainian armed forces.”
