Polish Border Guards Remove Drunk 22-Year-Old from Norwegian Flight after Lighting Cigarette

Polish border guards forcibly removed a 22-year-old passenger from a flight from Norway after he drank alcoholic beverages and lit a cigarette in the toilet.

Intervention at Gdańsk Airport

According to a Friday statement from the Coastal Unit of the Border Guard, officers intervened at Gdańsk airport on the previous day. The flight crew of the plane arriving from Alesund, Norway, had requested assistance from the border guards due to the passenger’s refusal to obey their instructions. The 22-year-old resident of Łódzkie Voivodeship was consuming his own alcohol and smoking a cigarette in the toilet.

Arrest and Charges

Officers from the Special Intervention Team of the Gdańsk Border Guard Unit entered the plane. The 22-year-old was escorted off in handcuffs. The breathalyzer test revealed that the man had over 2 promile in the exhaled air. The passenger was handed over to the police, who transported him to the Gdańsk Social Welfare Center for Intoxicated Persons. “He was administered a fine of 1,000 zł for disobeying the instructions of the vessel’s commander and disturbing public order,” the Border Guard stated.

Border Security Challenges

This year, officers intervened at the Gdańsk Rębiechowo airport in similar cases 21 times by October 4th. The government was set to extend border controls at crossings with Germany and Lithuania. Meanwhile, the Border Guard reported increasing pressure and the number of attempts to illegally cross the border with Belarus. Nearly 180 attempts were made on August 27th, and 160 attempts on the following day. The Border Guard stated that proceedings are being carried out for the arrest of 25 people, while one person was arrested for aiding and abetting.

Polish patrols have once again become the target of aggression, with individuals attempting to breach the border fence throwing stones and branches at officers.
