In his first act as president, Donald Trump revoked the Secret Service protection for former vice president Kamala Harris, sparking bipartisan outrage.
Revocation of Security Measures
Trump withdrew the longstanding Secret Service protection—for life—for former vice presidents, including Harris. The 6-month post-tenure security term ended on July 21st, but Biden’s directive extending it for another year was effectively canceled.
Decision Spreads Controversy
Trump banned “all security procedures” through a letter to the Homeland Security Secretary, handwritten on January 20th. The letter reads: “Authorize the termination of all security procedures previously approved by Executive Memorandum… that go beyond legal requirements for the following person… Kamala D. Harris, effective from September 1, 2025.”
