Polish Tourists Stranded in Corfu as Weather Disrupts Air Travel

Polish tourists were stranded at Corfu’s airport over the weekend after a sudden storm grounded flights, leaving travelers without information and assistance.

Disrupted Flights

29 flights were canceled due to weather conditions, with approximately half rerouted to other locations. Polish tourists found themselves stranded at the airport with no clear information about alternative options.

Stranded Passengers

One listener described the situation as a “drama” with travelers “crying” and “scenes from Dante.” A Grecos Travel Agency representative stated that three of the four planes originally planned had already returned with passengers, while the fourth was en route back to Poland.

Flooded Infrastructure

Saturday saw unforeseen weather impacts across western Greece, including heavy storms, strong winds, and flooding. On the island of Corfu alone, 126 mm of rain fell in just one hour, causing serious infrastructural damage as roads turned into rivers and buildings were flooded. Some areas lost power due to atmospheric disturbances.
